VIVALDI Social Care

Our mission is to improve the quality of life for people living, visiting, and working in care homes, while also reducing the risk of infections and avoiding hospital admissions. We endeavour to achieve this through the VIVALDI study that utilises existing data, with minimal input required from care home providers.

Infections like flu, urine infections, diarrhoea and vomiting are really common in older adults in care homes and often cause severe illness requiring hospital treatment.

Outbreaks of infections like the flu spread rapidly, often leading care homes to close and preventing residents from seeing their relatives.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted why we need better evidence and new ways to protect people who live and work in care homes from infection.

This study aims to reduce the impact of infection and outbreaks in care homes. We plan to do this by measuring the extent of infection and its consequences in residents and by doing research to find new, better ways to prevent infections and protect residents and staff.

Listen to the Naked Scientists Podcast about VIVALDI Social Care

Chris takes a powerful look at what it’s like to live and work in a care home — and how better use of data could help us do things differently.

I was proud to contribute to the conversation, alongside inspiring voices from Slawomir Janik, Registered Manager, Adelaide House Care Home along with two residents, Laura ShallcrossMike Slator and Deborah Sturdy, Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care. Department of Health and Social Care

Too often, adult social care is overlooked — but in this episode, we hear directly from residents like Eric and Linda, and from the team who show up every day with dedication and compassion.

The Vivaldi Study, led by Laura Shallcross at UCL, gives us a chance to turn experience into evidence — and evidence into action. But to make it count, we need providers, policymakers, and leaders at every level to really listen — and to be bold.

If you care about the future of adult social care, please take 30 minutes to listen.
