The latest edition of Outstanding Voices, the free digital magazine from The Outstanding Society, is now available, bringing together some of the sector’s leading voices to explore one question that resonates with every leader in adult social care:
What is keeping you awake at night?
From managing organisational risk and workforce pressures to embracing innovation, supporting care workers and celebrating excellence, Issue 5 is packed with practical insight, expert opinion and inspiring stories from across the sector.
Risk isn’t something to fear – it’s something to understand
This month’s central theme explores how providers can move beyond simply avoiding risk to building confident, resilient organisations that support positive risk-taking while delivering safe, person-centred care.
Highlights include:
Skills for Care’s Rob Hargreaves examines what the latest CQC assessments are telling us about managing risk, explaining how high-performing services create cultures where people are empowered, involved and supported rather than restricted.
Accora explores one of the most common concerns keeping care leaders awake at night—night-time falls—and shares practical strategies, including a free Fall Prevention Checklist, to help teams reduce risk while promoting independence.
Nourish discusses responsible Artificial Intelligence, reflecting on CQC’s recent guidance and how AI can support care without replacing the human relationships that define adult social care.
Supporting those who care for others
Risk isn’t only about the people receiving care.
In a powerful opening feature, The Care Workers’ Charity highlights the challenges facing today’s workforce, including recruitment, retention, wellbeing, financial pressures and mental health. The article reminds us that a resilient workforce is fundamental to delivering outstanding care and calls for long-term investment in the people who keep the sector moving every day.
Alongside this, Howden showcases its ongoing partnership with the charity and its commitment to supporting care workers through practical initiatives and fundraising.
Preparing for the future of complex care
As more people live with dementia, Parkinson’s and other complex conditions, providers are adapting their environments and approaches to meet changing needs.
CareHomeLife explores how thoughtful environmental design, assistive products and promoting physical activity can help people remain independent, safe and living well for longer.
Research in action
This edition also highlights how research continues to shape the future of adult social care.
Read about the recent visit by the Vivaldi Social Care team and senior government health experts to Eden Court, Battersea, where they saw first-hand how research is being embedded into everyday care to improve outcomes across the sector.
The magazine also features an opportunity to support important research from the University of Sheffield by contributing to a national survey exploring the management of people who experience a long lie following a fall.
Celebrating excellence
A new regular feature, Outstanding Spotlight, recognises services that have recently achieved an Overall Outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission.
Behind every Outstanding rating is a team with a story worth sharing, and The Outstanding Society is inviting providers to share their experiences so others across the sector can learn from their success.
Strengthening the voice of social care nursing
This issue also showcases the incredible work taking place through the Social Care Nursing Advisory Councils (SCNACs), including:
* The inaugural SCNAC South West Regional Event, bringing together professionals from across health, social care, education and research to develop collaborative prevention projects.
* National recognition for outstanding social care nursing leaders at the Adult Social Care Nursing Conference, including Gold and Silver Chief Nurse Awards.
* Opportunities for registered nurses to become involved with their regional SCNAC and help shape the future of adult social care nursing.

As always, Outstanding Voices includes a carefully selected programme of upcoming events, webinars and a growing library of free resources designed to help services learn, improve and thrive.
