A huge thank you to everyone who joined today’s webinar on protecting those we support in adult social care during heatwaves and other incidents.
The discussion brought together colleagues from across adult social care, DHSC, UKHSA, CQC, Skills for Care, Home Instead, Leeds University and UCL, sharing practical insights on preparedness, workforce resilience, medication management, data gathering, and protecting those most at risk.
One message came through loud and clear: perhaps it’s time to stop referring to these events as “extreme“ weather. The evidence suggests that periods of significant heat are becoming increasingly common and social care must start planning for them as part of the new normal, not as exceptional events.
Particular thanks to Dr Dan Hind, Leeds University, for sharing his important work on Heat Action Implementation in Long-Term and Domiciliary Care, highlighting the need for practical, evidence-based approaches to adaptation and resilience across the sector.
Our thanks also to colleagues from UKHSA for their invaluable contributions and the excellent guidance and resources available to support providers around heatwaves.
For social care providers, now is the time to reflect:
✅ What worked well during this summer’s heatwaves?
✅ What challenges did you face?
✅ What changes can you make now to better protect people who draw on care and support, and your workforce, in the future?
The conversation doesn’t end with today’s webinar. We encourage everyone to access the presentation slides and resources via our website and continue sharing learning across the sector. There are plenty of top tips in our slides to help you create a more robust plan for the future, as well as support for Wildfires and Water outages.
Together, we can move from reacting to weather events to building lasting resilience across adult social care. Watch this space for more events on this topic ahead of summer 2027.
We’d love to hear from you. Your experiences and insights can help shape future planning and strengthen resilience across adult social care. Please share your thoughts on the following questions:
- What was the most significant challenge your organisation faced during the recent heatwave?
- What practical adaptation or change has had the greatest impact in protecting the people you care for?
- If you could ask the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) for one action, resource, or support to strengthen resilience in adult social care, what would it be?
