Hello from Hampshire! (Care Association)

Like all Care Associations, Hampshire Care exists to support our members to deliver the best care possible in our county. That includes care of all types – including Nursing, Learning Disability, Mental Health and specialist Dementia provision, and Domiciliary care in people’s own homes – just as our members include large chains and one-off providers.

On their behalf, we work with commissioners at Hampshire, Portsmouth and Southampton councils and in the NHS to ensure that the voices of providers are heard. This means raising issues that are affecting providers with local commissioners and politicians, and nationally through the connections of the Care Association Alliance. We also have links with the media, and were able to get good coverage of some of the findings of the Provider Surveys we’ve conducted since the start of the Covid pandemic.[1]

By helping providers to connect with each other, we can support sharing good practice and new initiatives across our sector, improving the quality of care available in Hampshire. Building links across the sector is important to us, and we do a lot of signposting and introducing members to other services that complement what they do, or can support them, their staff or clients. We also have a number of very supportive patrons who offer members special discounts or other ways to save money.

Our Registered Managers network has been the source of some fabulous mutual support over the last couple of years, and we’re very proud of how our members have helped each other navigate all manner of trials and tribulations.

Of course we prefer to be celebrating the positive, and helping our members share the good news about how they support people to live better lives.  Our awards ceremony is a chance for everyone to get together and recognise some of the most dedicated staff working on the ground, not to mention let our hair down and relax for a change. This is one of our larger events, but we run a full programme of seminars, workshops and talks to help managers keep up to date, as well as a biannual major exhibition and conference at the Farnborough Exhibition Centre.

Hampshire Care was formed more than 40 years ago by local providers who believed in the benefits of cooperation, and our Executive Board is still made up of volunteers from our membership. However, as one of the more long-established Care Associations, and thanks to the support of our members, we are able to delegate much of the day to day work to a small team of paid staff. Today we aim to continue those principles by linking up with other organisations representing care providers, as we still hold that we can learn from each other and achieve more by working together.

Our commissioners recognise the opportunity to work with us to support provision and in recent years we have been commissioned to run projects including Trusted Assessors, Digital Champions and to support local care homes with the requirements for mandatory vaccination. We were delighted to have been awarded the title ‘Best Professional Association’ at the European Enterprise Awards.

As a member-led organisation, it’s important that we continue to hear from our members about their concerns and needs, especially important given the major reforms coming over the next year. We want to help our providers be ready for these and other changes so that they can continue to offer their clients the best possible care and support.
