The Outstanding Society welcomes any Outstanding rated provider to contribute to the Society’s main goal of sharing best practice and to support others to maintain/achieve an Outstanding rating.
The Knoll Care Partnership is a family owned and managed residential care provider. Having operated two smaller care homes in Trafford for over 30 years, we moved into our new purpose built and luxuriously styled home in October 2019. Bowfell House continues to run on the same ethos of extending our family approach to care to all who live and work here.
Bowfell House was absolutely thrilled to achieve an Outstanding CQC Rating on their first inspection in August 2021, with the inspector recording:
“People were at the heart of the service; receiving outstanding care that was personalised to them, taking account of their individual needs and wishes. Without exception people, relatives and professionals were full of praise about Bowfell House and the whole staff team. Bowfell House was exceptionally well-led and this was consistently echoed by people and staff we spoke with.”
The rating served to cement the values base which is present in every interaction that occurs throughout the home. Consistently working with high levels of integrity and compassion, all of our people are absolutely central to everything we do.
Registered Manager & Registered Mental Health Nurse
Castleford House Nursing Home, part of the Milkwood Care group, is an Outstanding-rated nursing home in Chepstow.
Castleford House specialises primarily in dementia care, but cares for people with a variety of conditions. We take a risk-positive approach to caring for people, seeking to enable everyone to reach their potential, no matter what. We aim to show people that nursing homes do not need to be “the last stop”, but just another exciting journey.
We are extensive and thorough in our recruitment, induction, training and supervision practices, empowering the team to innovate and develop and work to their fullest potential and enabling them to progress not just at Castleford House but in future careers by becoming management in other locations or going to university to become nurses, social workers, paramedics, occupational therapists and more.
Castleford House is currently creating and utilising training or development programs that will benefit not just the team and people living at the home, but other care settings if they wish to learn from us.
Our lifestyles and activity program provides enrichment and stimulation. Most of what we do is subtle but meaningful and empowering, promoting choice and enhancing people’s esteem and wellbeing.
Registered Manager Ben Miller is a Registered Mental Health Nurse who has worked at Castleford since October 2006, leaving briefly to complete his degree 2011-2013. Ben has worked his way from care assistant to nurse to deputy manager to finally becoming Registered Manager in June 2016. His first CQC inspection was in September 2016, achieving “Good” across all areas and then again in April 2019, achieving overall “Outstanding”. In 2019 the Castleford House management team were nominated for Caring UK’s “Management Team of the Year” award.”

At Excelcare, our first priority is putting the safety and wellbeing of the people living and working in our care homes and their family and friends, at the centre of any actions we take. We are privileged to care for remarkable people; people who are cherished and loved, who have achieved, and who can continue to achieve amazing things in their lives.
We strive to provide skilled care in respectful, friendly communities, and offer care with compassion to the people living in our care homes. Our team members bring together decades of experience and innovative, alternative visions of the potential in our family members’ latest years. We provide our care based on the idea that older people are fully-realised persons, with ideas, thoughts, and experiences which matter.
Our mission is to create more great memories for the people living in our homes and their loved ones. We appreciate each person is unique, with life experiences and events which led to choosing our homes. For this reason, we centre our care and support around the individual. We incorporate life stories, hopes and wishes into every person’s plan of care. We believe in a life well lived every day, that’s why many of the people living in our homes discover a renewed sense of wellbeing through socialising and gaining new friendships, learning new skills and enjoying all that life has to offer.
In partnership with a range of external health professionals, we don’t just look at someone’s care needs or where they may require our support, we also focus on meeting their overall mental wellbeing, happiness, diversity and cultural needs, as well as their future aspirations. We welcome each individual to become part of our family, and treat each person with dignity and respect, regardless of their age, background or beliefs.
With family values at our heart, it is important to us that we are truly supporting each individual to live to the fullest each day; focusing on the things individuals can still accomplish, not what they can’t. Our team are committed to ensuring independence, dignity and choice and our core value is to put people at the heart of the care we provide, so that people can enjoy days full of possibilities, while enjoying the best years of later life – all while knowing that care, companionship and support are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Operating outstanding homes is our mission and with Fitzwilliam House and Waterhall already achieving this status with the CQC, this gives us confidence that we are on a path to Outstanding homes across our portfolio.
Hallmark Care Homes
Executive Chair and Founder
Established in 1997, Hallmark Care Homes is a multi-award-winning care provider that has three ‘Outstanding’ homes.
As a family-run care provider, we understand the importance of nurturing relationships and so all of our care at our 19 homes is centred around the values of Togetherness, Quality, Openness, Individuality and Growth.
We have won over 100 awards over the last 24 years for the quality of the residential, nursing and dementia care we provide and we receive exceptional feedback from residents and relatives.
We recently received the highest recommendation rating in the top 20 mid-size care home groups for the sixth year running with a review score 9.7 out of 10 on Carehome.co.uk.
We were also awarded Care Provider and Care Home Group of the Year at the 2021 Health Investor, National Care Awards and Leaders in Care Awards ceremonies.
Stow Healthcare Group
Stow Healthcare is the group that doesn’t slow down and doesn’t stop innovating. Ruth French and Roger Catchpole have taken a start up company to a four times national care group award winner in just a decade. Now comprising six homes, Stow Healthcare has a reputation as a ‘disrupter’ in the industry, acquiring homes with the most difficult history and poorest rating, and driving them forward to CQC ‘outstanding’ rated homes.
We simply aim to be the best quality care providers in the region. It is one thing to create a new home from scratch; it is quite another to turn around the failure of others, win over staff, gain trust from residents and families, and have the courage to try and make a success of a home with a troubled reputation.
We have broad experience, including operating a COVID Designated Setting and we have also developed a new concept in Memory Care with a Montessori-focussed dementia care setting. Our focus on training benefits all our staff and those they care for – we have developed innovative in house programmes for Care Home Assistant Practitioners and Memory Centre Homemakers, and support Nursing Associates as well as preceptee nurses in our organisation.
Vida Healthcare design, develop and then operate specialist dementia care homes. We know that good building design focused on the various needs of people living with dementia can have a direct and positive impact on lifestyle and wellbeing.
However without a committed and well trained workforce our service cannot exist which is why our Vida Academy offers bespoke training programmes for all staff which allows them to be the specialists our residents require and offers the opportunity and security of a meaningful career in social care.
Our ethos of care is the foundation of our operation which truly focuses on the individual and quite simply relies on kindness and empathy and this is not just towards residents and their families but to each other.
